Once hired, recruits must complete the Fayetteville Fire Academy. Throughout the academy, newly hired candidates receive firefighter certification training and are evaluated to ensure they are able to perform the tasks required for the job. Upon graduation from the academy, students have completed the requirements for certification as Firefighter I & II and Hazardous Materials Responder Level I through the NC Department of Insurance, Office of the State Fire Marshal.
The Fayetteville Fire/Emergency Management Department offers employees a chance to specialize in several different areas of interest. After graduating from the recruit academy all new employees are assigned to an engine or truck company in the Suppression Division. Through specialty training and experience gained you may apply for an assignment on a rescue company or to be assigned to either the Hazardous Materials or USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) Teams. An assignment in the Prevention Division allows employees to use skills in inspections, investigations and prevention programs. A Training Division assignment allows employees to pass on knowledge and skills learned through the recruit academy and in-service training.
