Selection And Evaluation Process

The process to become a City of Fayetteville Fire Fighter will include several phases. All phases of the hiring process must be successfully completed in order to be considered for this position.

  1. Submit a completed application packet by closing date of posting.
  2. Pass a driver’s license record check according to City of Fayetteville Driving Standard
  3. Successfully complete the physical agility test that consists of a series of exercises created to simulate tasks that are routinely performed by firefighters on the job. All exercises are timed and will be scored as Pass/Fail. If a candidate does not satisfactorily complete an exercise in the maximum alotted time, he/she will not be allowed to continue in the selection process. Practice sessions are offered in advance of the actual test. 
  1. Satisfactorily complete a written examination designed to assess the skills necessary to be an effective firefighter. The examination is administered by the Human Resource Development Department and covers reasoning, problem solving, decision making, mathematical comprehension and computation, reading comprehension, and mechanical reasoning.
  2. Candidates who pass the written examination will be contacted for a panel interview. The panel will consist of designated members of the Fire/Emergency Management Department.
  3. Pass a criminal background investigation.
  4. Pass a physical examination and pre-employment drug screening.
