8/26/20098/26/2009 Recently a few members from the Fayetteville Fire Department assisted in installing a residential sprinkler system in a newly constructed Habitat for Humanity home. These sprinklers are not a requirement, Habitat for Humanity elected to include them due to a life safety benefit. There have been no documented deaths as a result of fire in a sprinklered building. These sprinkler systems are designed to activate “one sprinkler at a time” in the event of a fire, allowing for safe evacuation of all occupants in the home. For homeowners, the advantages of these sprinklers systems include a safer environment for their families, protection of their investment and irreplaceable family possessions, and lower insurance rates. These sprinkler systems are also designed to run off the domestic water supply and typically only add an additional 1% to the overall cost of a home under new construction.
