In the late 1980s Fayetteville Fire Department developed and implemented its Hazardous Materials Response Team to help mitigate incidents involving hazardous materials or chemical releases. These may come in the form of explosives, flammable and combustible substances, poisons, or radioactive materials. Hazardous Materials Response Team members must obtain certification through the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal as NC State Hazardous Materials Responder Level II by completing the 96-hour Hazardous Materials Course and National Fire Academy's chemistry class. The training teaches team members to understand the physical properties of various hazardous chemicals and substances, further enabling them to reduce the chance of loss of life and/or property during incident responses. Depending on the nature of a call, the Fayetteville Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team may respond utilizing a combination of apparatus, equipment and technology to help identify or classify a hazardous substance.
Have a spill or release that requires an emergency response? Dial 911 for all emergencies. The incident commander, local emergency management coordinator, or NC Emergency Management Division's area coordinator may initiate requests for a Regional Response Team emergency response. The requester may be asked to provide the basic information, such as:
- Substance/chemical name if known
- Substance is liquid, solid or gas
- Danger present and area threatened
- Fire, health, or explosive hazards
- Evacuations in progress, or contemplated
The Fayetteville Hazardous Materials Response Team is based at Fire Station 1, 607 Person St.
